Mercedes-Benz Sprinter: the basis for camper manufacturers for 30 years

Ten percent of all Sprinters are delivered as campervans. Mercedes-Benz Sprinter: the foundation for campervan construction for 30 years.

Last year, one in ten Sprinters was sold worldwide in the campervan industry. At the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf (August 29 – September 7, 2025), the first Sprinter generation from 1995, converted into a campervan, and the current Sprinter as a campervan version will be on display. Carthago, Frankia, HIP Campers, Laika, Malibu, and Niesmann+Bischoff, among others, will be presenting new RV’s based on the Sprinter.

The first Sprinter came onto the market in 1995. From the start, the Sprinter was available as a panel van, passenger bus, chassis, box truck, or tipper. Wheelbases ranged from 3000 to 4025 millimeters. With innovations such as the extra-high roof and a fourth body length, Mercedes-Benz presented the second-generation Sprinter in 2006. Safety improvements were made. Innovations included the electronic stability program ESP and headlights with cornering lights. Crosswind Assist also made its debut in 2013. Among the first campervan manufacturers were Carthago, Dethleffs, Eura Mobil, Frankia, Hymer, Rapido, Westfalia, and Wochner.

The third and current generation of the Sprinter debuted in 2018. The Sprinter also became available as a drivehead. The drivetrain options have also been expanded: the Sprinter with the OM654 diesel engine is now available with front-wheel drive, in addition to rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. In 2021, the all-wheel drive was further developed and now distributes the drive torque variably between the front and rear axles. In addition, there are factory-installed comfort features specifically designed for campervan use, such as the sleep mode.

The future of the Sprinter is the Mercedes-Benz Van Architecture. All newly developed Mercedes-Benz vans are based on the modular, flexible, and scalable Mercedes-Benz Van Architecture. In addition to the electric models of the Van Electric Architecture (VAN.EA), the second version of the Van Architecture, the Van Combustion Architecture (VAN.CA), introduces diesel-powered vans.

The new campervans based on the current Sprinter on display at the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf include the Multisport & Regeneration from Alphavan, the Bürstner Habiton (HM 6.0), the Carthago C2-tourer 141 KB-LE and the Carthago C-line I 4.9 LE, the Encanto from CS-Reisemobile, the Next from Frankia, the 4Family from HIP Campers, the Kreos from Laika, the Malibu I 450 RB-LE, and the Arto 84E from Niesmann+Bischoff.
