DAF Trucks manufactures this five-axle chassis in-house. It is suitable for heavy-duty applications (technical gross vehicle weight 52 tonnes, legal 50 tonnes) and for mounting a crane plus tipper body or container system. This chassis has a 34-tonne tridem rear axle set (two driven axles plus a liftable steered trailing axle) and two steered leaf-sprung front axles (each 8 or 9 tonnes). This new DAF chassis variant is designated FAF. DAF is responding to competitors who have long supplied five-axle chassis — such as Volvo, Scania, and Iveco.
The double front axle and the associated axle loads allow for the installation of heavy-duty loading cranes directly behind the cab. The tridem’s steered trailing axle has a maximum static load of 26 tonnes, which is important for — for example — dropping off and loading containers or unloading a full tipper.
Buyers of the 10×4 FAF chassis can choose from two cabs: the XD or the XF daycab. Available engines are the PACCAR MX-11 and the MX-13, both with automated TraXon transmissions. Power outputs range from 300 hp (220 kW) to 530 hp (390 kW). An electric drivetrain will also be available in the future.
As is typical of DAF, the truck is equipped with various safety features, including the DAF Digital Vision System (camera), DAF Corner View, and a reversing camera.
