Iveco and PlusAI launch new autonomous driving program in Spain. Truck manufacturer is working on “fundamental transformation of road transport.”
Iveco Trucks is extending its partnership with PlusAI, a supplier of AI-based virtual driver software for autonomous (driverless) truck driving. Together, the two companies aim to deploy the first autonomous Level 4 heavy-duty trucks in Southern Europe. The project is being carried out in collaboration with the Spanish logistics company Sesé and the regional government of Aragon.
Iveco and PlusAI are currently building two Iveco S-Way tractor units with Level 4 autonomous driving capabilities, controlled by the PlusAI SuperDrive software program. Starting in 2026, the autonomous trucks will be tested for several years. For safety reasons, a driver will always be on board throughout the entire test phase. The test trucks will operate on the approximately 300-kilometer route between Madrid and Zaragoza.
Iveco aims to elevate the level of automation in trucks. Autonomous transport is part of this. Trials were previously conducted in Germany with autonomous tractor units at levels 2+ and 4. Iveco and PlusAI talk about a future “fundamental transformation” in road transport.
