Iveco S-eWay H2 — Fuel Cell 6×2. Tractor, electric drive with fuel cell.
Iveco Trucks has developed a long-distance tractor that runs on hydrogen. It is still a European experiment, but this truck will eventually be for sale.
The Iveco S-eWay Fuel Cell has a range of up to 800 kilometers and can be refueled in less than 20 minutes and with 70 kilograms of compressed hydrogen at a pressure of 700 bar. While driving, the hydrogen is converted into electricity, which powers the engines. The truck has a 6×2 configuration. Iveco is not yet providing details about, for example, the power and weight.
As long as there is no serious network of hydrogen filling stations, it will remain projects and experiments. In the meantime, Iveco is investigating various types of alternative drives for trucks. These include an IVECO S-Way prototype with an XCURSOR-13 hydrogen combustion engine from FPT Industrial, and a hybrid truck with a range extension system with a Cursor-9 H2 engine. Both were presented at the IAA Commercial Vehicles 2024.
In February 2025, Iveco handed over two S-eWay Fuel Cell tractors to the BMW automotive manufacturer, which will use them on fixed routes. This European project (H2Haul) is co-funded by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership and aims to investigate the reliability of hydrogen-powered trucks. This is done through field tests in different real-world deployments, in collaboration with various hydrogen suppliers and in different geographical ecosystems. The BMW project also includes the installation of two hydrogen filling stations.
