ZF Group — AxTrax2 LF — Electric drive axle for low-floor vehicles. Electric drive axle, continuous power up to 360 kW, for low-floor applications.
The LF (low-floor) version of the AxTrax 2, ZF’s electric drive axle. This portal axle is suitable for low-floor buses, among other applications. The photo clearly shows that it is an axle with independent suspension and a low center section (a kind of “inverted portal”).
With dual PSM hairpin motors, an 800 V SiC inverter, and oil cooling, the axle delivers a continuous power of up to 360 kW and a peak torque of 36,800 Nm. This allows a 30-ton articulated bus to climb a 25% gradient with a single driven axle.
ZF first unveiled the AxTrax 2 LF at Busworld 2023. The introductory model had a maximum power output of 210 kW. Since 2023, this AxTrax has been further developed, with significantly higher power and 20% lower energy consumption. This also allows for the use of a smaller battery and increases the range.
The fully integrated ZF AxTrax low-floor axle combines drive, braking, and suspension systems in a compact architecture that also optimizes the available space for batteries and passengers. This is clearly visible in the photo: the AxTrax axle with air suspension, shock absorbers, and suspension attached to the vehicle chassis.
ZF has since received an order from a bus manufacturer in India, which will equip thousands of vehicles with this axle in the coming years. The buses will be deployed both in India and in export countries.
The AxTrax 2 is also sold in a version for mounting in semi-trailers.
