ZF is launching an interesting variant of the well-known TraXon 2: the TraXon 2 Hybrid. This transmission features a built-in electric motor (continuous power 190 kW – operating voltage 600-800 V) that provides support for driving heavy-duty trucks. The ZF TraXon 2 Hybrid can be combined with diesel, hydrogen, natural gas, or hydrogen combustion engines, making these vehicles hybrid. This innovation has been tested and will soon go into production.
The electric motor is integrated between the clutch and the gearshift unit, thus operating in series with the primary power source (the combustion engine). Compared to other hybrid solutions, the TraXon 2 Hybrid offers the advantage of saving space. The box is estimated to be 20 cm longer than a conventional TraXon 2, eliminating the need for a separate electric motor in the drivetrain. However, a drive battery must be attached to the chassis (as with all hybrid trucks).
The TraXon 2 Hybrid is capable of driving the vehicle independently, meaning with the combustion engine switched off. In Boost mode, both engines operate simultaneously. When braking, the electric motor operates in reverse: it brakes and recovers the kinetic energy as electricity stored in the battery.
According to ZF, the new solution provides significant fuel savings: up to 47 percent for long-distance transport and up to 73 percent for distribution transport. This also gives the truck a better VECTO rating and allows for toll discounts.
Trucks with this transmission can be built as full hybrids (without a charging plug) and as plug-in hybrids (with a charging plug).
