ZF TraXon 2 with Intarder debuts in new HINO S-elega coach in Japan

ZF’s TraXon 2 automated transmission—combined with an integrated Intarder—is now available in HINO’s S-elega coach in Japan. In addition, ZF supplies braking and chassis technologies as well as components for modern driver assistance systems.

The S-elega represents the latest generation of HINO coaches and is the first HINO vehicle to be equipped with the ZF TraXon 2 Coach transmission. The project also marks an expansion of the partnership between ZF and HINO; the two companies were already collaborating in the truck sector.

With over 1.5 million systems sold worldwide, TraXon has proven itself to be one of ZF’s most successful automated manual transmissions for heavy-duty commercial vehicles. Building on this proven platform, TraXon 2 represents the latest generation in the AMT family for heavy-duty trucks and coaches. The 12-speed automated transmission features an electronic control unit and shift actuators developed by ZF, ensuring optimal gear selection and precise shifting behavior.

Equipped with a latest-generation microprocessor and an integrated safety module, TraXon 2 combines increased computing power with advanced cybersecurity features. An extensive software package and integration functions with the braking system further enhance the transmission’s performance and efficiency. Depending on the application and operating conditions, ZF estimates that the TraXon 2 can reduce fuel consumption and COâ‚‚ emissions by up to 1.7 percent compared to the previous TraXon generation.

For coach applications, the TraXon 2 can be combined with the ZF Intarder, a hydrodynamic retarder integrated into the transmission. This system is designed for applications with limited installation space. An intarder is an auxiliary braking system that slows the vehicle when engaged, thereby relieving the load on the disc brakes. This results in reduced wear and increased safety.
