The Volkswagen Transporter T7 is longer and wider than the T6 and packed with electronics.
It’s available as a panel van, passenger van, double cab van, chassis cab/pickup, and camper van. There’s also a Caravelle: a luxury passenger bus.
Compared to the T6, the new Transporter offers slightly more space, a higher payload, and a greater towing capacity. It’s available in two lengths and two roof heights, and customers can choose between three powertrains: diesel, hybrid (gasoline-electric), and fully electric.
The diesel engine is available with an output of 81 kW (110 hp), 110 kW (150 hp), or 125 kW (170 hp). The plug-in hybrid (eHybrid) has a system output of 171 kW (232 hp). The electric versions with a 64 kWh battery (net) offer a choice of 100 kW (136 hp), 160 kW (218 hp), or 210 kW (286 hp). A lower-powered electric variant with a smaller battery, intended primarily for urban distribution, will follow later. The 125 kW TDI engine comes standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission, while this transmission is optional for the 110 kW version. The manual versions have a six-speed transmission. The hybrid always features a CVT.
The T7 is 14.6 cm longer than the T6. This is mainly due to the longer wheelbase, which increased from 300 to 310 cm (L1) and from 340 to 350 cm (L2). The load width also increased by 14.8 cm. This is particularly useful when loading a Euro pallet between the wheel arches. This size is now 139.2 cm. The cargo area length in the Transporter T7 is 260 cm (L1) or 300 cm (L2). Need more space? Then there are the inevitable upgrades. Unfortunately, we might say, because the more electronics, the more complex the maintenance. But let’s move on. The Transporter T7 no longer starts with a key, but with a button. The instrument cluster is a 12-inch digital display. There’s also a 13-inch screen for the infotainment system.

The selector lever for the (optional) automatic transmission is positioned higher on the dashboard than in the T6.1, creating more legroom. The gearshift lever for the manual versions remains in the center console. The steering wheel is equipped with control buttons. A mechanical handbrake is no longer used; it has been replaced by a button in the center of the dashboard.

As we’ve already mentioned, there are 12V and USB outlets for charging devices. Very important these days. The diesel versions have a 230V socket near the driver’s seat, with a 400W output. That’s enough for two laptops. The electric versions optionally have sockets up to 2300W, for example, for a circular saw or hedge trimmer.
Even more electronic features. The new VW Transporter comes standard with LED headlights, LED taillights, an electronic parking brake with auto-hold function, a rain sensor, lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, and dynamic traffic sign recognition.
