Aramco wants to capture CO2 emissions from trucks directly and use them in the process industry

The Saudi oil company Aramco says it will soon be launching an installation for capturing CO2 from combustion trucks. Aramco claims that the developed technology can eliminate 50% of the total CO2 emissions from heavy trucks.

Aramco has been testing the system since 2012, including in its research center in Delft. After ten years of development, the system is ready to be sold on a large scale to truck manufacturers.

Aramco calls its system Mobile Carbon Capture. The philosophy is to tackle emissions at the source. The operation is roughly as follows. The exhaust gases are led through a mixture of water and N2, where the CO2 binds and disappears from the exhaust gases.

The challenge is still how to remove the CO2 captured in liquid. This could be tapped at a gas station and transported to the industry. According to Aramco, the waste mixture is ideally suited for the production of valuable materials that can be used to reinforce houses, for example. The company even sees the construction of pipelines for the discharge in the future. According to Aramco, there are 27 seaports worldwide that can serve as a hub to transport the carbon capture liquid to chemical plants.

Another challenge is to make the system affordable.

What the Mobile Carbon Capture system looks like is a secret. Aramco does not release any photos. Only the accompanying photo of a test setup. (September 23, 2023)
