DAF – Veldhuizen XF 350e FAN – 6×2 “widespread” chassis with a body featuring gull-wing doors. A multifunctional electric truck with a “widespread” rear-axle configuration, offering a payload capacity of approximately 14.3 tonnes.
This three-axle electric rigid truck has been modified by Veldhuizen, a specialist in vehicle conversions, which relocated the rear axle further back. This “widespread” configuration—incorporating a 10-tonne steered rear axle—increases the payload capacity by approximately 2,500 kg, resulting in a net payload of 14.3 tonnes (before accounting for the weight of a truck-mounted forklift). Equipped with five battery packs, the vehicle has a range of over 400 km.
The axle configuration is not the only unique feature of this truck. The body (manufactured by Zuidwijk) is equipped with side doors that open upwards, allowing for loading and unloading from the sides. When closed, the body is sufficiently robust to be used for removal services. The truck-mounted forklift is also electrically powered, making the entire combination emission-free.
This DAF is owned by the transport company Van Noort, based in Waddinxveen (the Netherlands). It is the second electric truck in the company’s 45-vehicle fleet. Managing Director Fred van Noort anticipates acquiring more electric trucks in the future; an electric vehicle grants the company access to low-emission zones, and an increasing number of clients are requesting emission-free transport.
“rising diesel costs and truck toll discounts are making the business case for this electric truck increasingly attractive”
Initial experiences with the new DAF XF 350e have been positive. According to Van Noort, the truck is proving its worth in daily operations: “The DAF fits seamlessly into our scheduling, with no limitations whatsoever. In practice, its range of over 400 kilometers proves to be more than sufficient.”
Van Noort’s services include removals, specialized transport—such as kitchens, printers, and refrigeration units for retail interiors—and operations involving a truck-mounted crane. Consequently, the new electric DAF needed to be not only sustainable but, above all, highly versatile. The XF cab is spacious and offers excellent all-around visibility. Furthermore, the truck is equipped with a drawbar coupling, allowing it to tow a trailer.
“While the purchase price of an electric truck is higher, rising diesel costs and truck toll discounts are making the business case increasingly attractive—especially since we can charge the vehicles at our own facility using favorable energy rates. I expect this electric DAF to remain in service for us for at least ten years.” For maintenance, Van Noort has a contract with the DAF dealer.
