Volvo Trucks expands its Driver Alert Support safety system with an eye-tracking camera

Volvo Trucks expands its Driver Alert Support safety system with an eye-tracking camera. A warning signal sounds if the driver falls asleep.

Volvo Trucks is expanding its Driver Alert Support safety system with an eye-tracking camera. This helps detect signs of driver fatigue. The driver receives a warning in their dashboard if their alertness is no longer at 100%. If they ignore this, an acoustic signal sounds. The system is active at speeds above 18 km/h (11 mph).

The enhanced Driver Alert Support uses two cameras to detect fatigue. A new eye-tracking camera in the side display detects distractions and alerts the driver with a pop-up message and a warning signal. No video is recorded. A forward-facing camera—already part of the current Driver Alert Support system—monitors driving behavior and the truck’s position relative to the lane and the shoulder. The system recognizes typical signs of fatigue on driving behavior.

With this expansion, Driver Alert Support now complies with the second phase of the new European safety legislation (the General Safety Regulation, GSR2), which comes into effect in July 2026. This second phase requires all new trucks in the EU to be equipped with Advanced Driver Distraction Warning (ADDW) systems.

The new version of the Driver Alert Support system will be standard on Volvo FH, FM, FE, and FL models in the EU, Norway, Switzerland, and the UK. It will also be available as an option in other markets. Production of the new system will begin in November 2025. Outside the EU, Volvo Trucks will continue to offer the current version of the system with only the forward-facing camera.
