DAF is making preparations for driverless transport. DAF is partnering with Einride AB.
It is not yet permitted, and it is unknown when it will be: driving a truck without a driver. However, various truck manufacturers are preparing for the era when this will be allowed. Following Iveco and Volvo Trucks, DAF Trucks is now also taking these kinds of initiatives. DAF is partnering with the Swedish group Einride, which has developed a system for autonomous driving (Einride Driver).
This involves a so-called Level 4 system: a vehicle can independently perform repetitive driving tasks under predetermined conditions.
As a first step, Einride and DAF, together with experts from the independent Dutch research institute TNO, are investigating and testing how Einride Driver can be integrated into DAF’s new electric trucks. In other words, you will never find this system on diesel DAFs.
The first tests and validations of key interfaces will be carried out in the course of 2026. Subsequently, the integration and commissioning of Einride’s autonomous driving software will take place in 2027, and further tests will be conducted.
DAF parent company Paccar already has experience with autonomous driving. DAF will utilize the knowledge the group has gained in this area.
