Mahle GmbH has developed a new type of cabin heating specifically for electric vehicles. The HeatX Range+ system uses heat recovery and saves approximately 20% of the energy used for interior heating.
Tests with a medium-sized electric van at an outside temperature of -7°C and an interior temperature of 20°C resulted in an additional range of 10 km. The continuous supply of oxygen-rich air ensures high air quality in the interior and minimizes the risk of condensation on the car windows.
The new system uses the air conditioning evaporator to harness the heat energy from the air flowing out of the vehicle. The outgoing airflow heats the refrigerant, and this heat is transferred to the fresh air intake before it enters the vehicle interior. This ensures efficient preheating of the fresh air.
HeatX Range+ is designed for refrigerant R1234yf and can be used with alternative refrigerants with minor adjustments.
