Dangel – Opel Combo L1/L2 1.5 BlueHDi 96+10 kW — compact 4×4 van. Compact 4×4 van, loading length 152 / 187 cm, high off-road capability.
You can’t see it from the outside, but underneath the skin the small Dangel van has been radically renewed. Instead of the traditional transfer case that distributes the power of the diesel engine over both axles, the rear axle is now equipped with an electric drive motor at the rear axle, that is automatically switched on when four-wheel drive is required. This 10 kW / 1600 Nm electric motor gets its energy from an additional battery with a voltage of 48V and a capacity of 4.8 kWh. This battery is recharged while driving with, among other things, brake regeneration. A clever concept from the French manufacturer Dangel — who has been working with the former PSA for decades — who developed this especially for Stellantis vans.
The innovative drive can also be ordered on the basis of the Fiat Doblo Cargo, the Peugeot Partner and the Citroën Berlingo. These models are technically identical and only differ in details and of course the badge on the grille.
Under the bonnet is the 1.5 litre turbo diesel that we also find in the Combo 4×2, but then in the version with the most power, namely 96 kW / 130 hp. An automatic gearbox with eight gears is standard. The Dangel has 10 cm extra ground clearance compared to the 4×2, and protective plating on the bottom.
This results in this car moving very swiftly on good and bad roads and in the terrain, while everything is automatic. You don’t have to clutch, don’t have to shift, don’t have to choose between 2WD and 4WD… just accelerate, steer and brake. However, there is one selection button, namely for the driving mode: normal or Low. The Low mode is suitable for heavy terrain and steep mountain roads, where a lot of torque is needed at low speeds.
Opel has redesigned the cockpit of the latest Combo. There are two 10-inch colour displays for the graphics, multimedia and connectivity functions. Wireless smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is part of the standard equipment. If desired, drivers can also use their own smartphone as an infotainment system via the innovative smartphone holder; they can then operate it via the buttons on the steering wheel.
The Combo 4×4 also offers — depending on the version — up to eighteen driver assistance systems. The highlight is Dynamic Surround View, with two cameras – one above the rear doors and one below the right-hand exterior mirror – the images of which can be seen in the digital rear-view mirror. This system increases the visibility around the Combo, ideal for complex situations.
Other options that are worth mentioning: the Extra Protection Pack (useful, for example, on steep gravel roads), adapted Dangel towbars (the standard Opel towbars do not fit to the Dangel) and off-road tyres. The Dangel Combo is NOT available in the MPV versions, but only as a delivery van.
