Scania has added a new abbreviation to the growing series of technical terms surrounding environmentally friendly transport: EREV, Extended Range Electric Vehicle. The Swedish truck manufacturer shows what this means with this chassis that was put together at the request of DHL. This Scania 23G has electric drive with a continuous power of 230 kW (peak: 295 kW) and a battery pack of 416 kWh, plus a small petrol engine that can charge the batteries on the road.
It has been a long time since petrol was used as a fuel in trucks, but in this special case it was the best solution. In the future, this generator will be replaced by one that can run on clean diesel (HVO).
Scania emphasises that this is a temporary excursion into the use of fossil fuels. The future lies in electro-mobility, but the inadequate charging infrastructure makes this necessary. User DHL expects the e-truck to drive 80 to 90% of the distance travelled on electricity, with the petrol engine only occasionally helping out. The truck in the photo is used to commute between Hamburg and Berlin, with the familiar yellow swap bodies of the parcel carrier.
The generator is placed where a sixth battery would normally be. Without petrol-powered backup, the range of this Scania would be around 550 km. With a generator, that is increased to 650 to 800 km. Scania states the range with a large margin because the vehicle still has to be tested.
DHL expresses the wish that this Scania will receive a considerable discount on the kilometre tax of the German state, as it significantly reduces emissions. Christian Levin, CEO Scania, emphasises the importance of expanding the charging infrastructure for electric trucks, so that these types of temporary solutions are no longer necessary.
