Burgers BAO-02 — double-deck semi-trailer — length 11.5m

Burgers BAO-02 — double-deck semi-trailer — length 11.5 meters. Double-deck semi-trailer, payload capacity 23.4 tonnes.

Royal Burgers (based in Aalsmeer, NL) supplied a short version of the well-known BAO double-deck semi-trailer to the retail chain Action. These trailers are suitable for urban distribution. They feature two hydraulically steered 9-tonne axles, making them extremely maneuverable. Technically, they are not solid axles but independently suspended wheels on either side of the trailer.

These double-deck semi-trailers are custom-built for the client, with lengths ranging roughly from 10 to 14 meters. Burgers prides itself on the fact that the client can recoup the investment within a year, thanks to the increased cargo capacity. Of course, this is only possible if a high load utilization rate is achieved.

As shown in the photo, Action uses roll containers. Depending on the trailer length and the type of roll container, up to 87 units can fit inside; the capacity is lower for this shorter version. The photo also clearly shows that a driver of average height cannot quite stand upright on the loading deck, as the loading compartments are 180 cm high. This is certainly a disadvantage, as the person inside the trailer must always walk in a stooped position. However, solutions exist: for instance, this Burgers model can be equipped with a moving floor, or the intermediate deck can be mounted lower so that one can at least stand upright on the upper level. And, of course, you could simply hire a shorter driver. The double-decker is equipped with an advanced external loading lift (a so-called portal lift) that also serves as the rear closure for the cargo area. For safety reasons, the lift features folding side rails. It is equipped with ramps on both sides, allowing for loading and unloading from three directions. The trailer’s interior has a smooth finish to eliminate the risk of injury. Upon request, this trailer can also be fitted with rear doors.

This double-deck trailer has a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 33 tonnes. With an unladen weight of 9,580 kg, a payload capacity of 23,420 kg remains. The maximum fifth-wheel load is 15 tonnes; a 6×2 tractor unit is required to fully utilize the weight capacity.
