Renault Trucks E-Tech T — 4×2 tractor — electric drive

Renault Trucks E-Tech T — 4×2 tractor — electric drive. Tractor, 4×2, electric drive, power 490 kW, max. fifth wheel load 7397 kg.

Renault Trucks has presented its new electrically powered semi-trailer tractor: the E-Tech T.

This truck has three parallel-mounted electric motors, coupled to a standard Renault Trucks OptiDriver gearbox, of which six (instead of twelve) gear changes are used. The maximum power is 490 kW / 660 hp. This is sufficient for a combination weight of 44 tonnes, in the Netherlands up to 50 tonnes.

The E-Tech T tractor can be ordered with 5 or 6 Samsung battery packs. These cube-shaped packs are mounted on the left and right of the frame. The wheelbase has been extended by 10 cm (compared to the diesel version) to 390 cm, to provide space for the batteries and to improve weight distribution.

The E-Tech T 4×2 tractor is 2500 to 2750 kg heavier than the diesel. This results in a lower maximum fifth wheel pressure. A 6×2 and 6×4 tractor will soon also be available in E-Tech, which can be used to transport heavier trailers. The truck has air suspension all around as standard, for comfort and the higher weight. Various types of PTOs are possible: mechanical PTO from the gearbox, electromechanical PTO and electric PTO.

The dimensions are slightly different from the diesel Renault T tractor. In addition to the extra 10 centimetres between the front axle and the rear axle, the front is 11.5 centimetres longer, because the grille protrudes slightly forward. This is to improve aerodynamics. This makes the total length of this tractor approximately 642 cm. With a standard ISO trailer, a tractor-trailer combination exceeds the maximum permitted length by 10.5 cm, but this is permitted according to EU law 2015/719. This is also stated on the type plate to prevent misunderstandings with the inspection authorities.

Renault Trucks has made an accurate estimate of the range. With a full battery charge (6 batteries), the tractor (depending on the total weight of the combination) can travel 260 to 355 km. With 5 batteries, this is 215 to 290 km. These are figures subject to change. The flatness of the terrain, the driver’s driving behaviour and the outside temperature have an influence.

These are good values, but given the absence of public charging stations, not enough to set off unprepared. So planning is required, and as is well known, Renault Trucks helps its customers with this, with an analysis in advance, advice on loading and planning and monitoring when the zero-emission transport actually takes place. The customer buys a service contract, including a guarantee for the life of the batteries, assistance, up-to-date route planning, driver training, software updates, service planning, remote monitoring of vital functions, and towing assistance if something goes wrong. Renault Trucks is so friendly as to come and tow you away if you accidentally get stranded with a flat battery – a maximum of two times.

The driver installs an App on his smartphone. This gives him peace of mind about the charge level, consumption, remaining range, progress of the charging process, and he can even switch on the cabin heating remotely before he starts driving. Incidentally, this is not for comfort but because the energy then comes from the shore power instead of from the truck battery.

The dashboard and steering wheel of the T-series have been modernised with a lot of technical information on the display, control buttons on the steering wheel and an extra display for entertainment, route planning, comfort functions and camera display. Possibly with airbag in the steering wheel.

The first deliveries will take place at the beginning of 2024. (14 September 2023)
