Volvo Trucks is showcasing electric trucks in operation. The transition will ultimately be successful, but sales need a boost right now.
Around twenty-five electric Volvo trucks, in various versions, will be lined up today and tomorrow at the Volvo Trucks Netherlands parking lot in Beesd (NL). Journalists and transport operators brave the rain showers to view the trucks up close, study the technical details, and hear stories from their owners. The trucks have been borrowed from companies that already operate them. A unique event, as the importer usually exhibits demo vehicles that are not yet in operation.
Volvo Trucks wants to boost sales of its electric vehicles. Electric drive is the future, but sales haven’t been peaking lately. An estimated 700 electric trucks over 6 tonnes GVW will be sold in the Netherlands this year, representing around ten percent of the total number of trucks sold. Volvo’s market share for these electric trucks is 35% – the Swedish manufacturer still leads the way but other brands are catching up. Events like these should inspire hesitant fleet owners. Some explanation is needed, however, because you don’t just buy an electric truck. You have to plan carefully, organize charging options, apply for subsidies, and find the customer willing to pay extra for emission-free transport. :-/
Volvo Trucks has a dedicated department that guides entrepreneurs in organizing this transition process, even – if necessary – including installing solar panels and backup batteries on the premises. Sustainable transport is often a requirement in government tenders, which is why the construction and civil engineering sectors are at the forefront of innovation, says Jan Schouten, energy transition manager at Volvo Trucks NL. “But entrepreneurs in other segments are also now confronted with a new reality. For example, in urban distribution. Initially, there are still exemptions, but eventually, you can no longer drive into many cities with a diesel truck. Then you need to switch.”
Every transport assignment is possible with electric trucks, Volvo wants to emphasize this week. Refuse collection trucks, aerial platforms, rigid trucks, tractors, tippers, even a mobile floor layer – 100% emission-free. Marie Carlsson, Vice President of Electromobility Development at Volvo Trucks, walks among the innovative vehicles. “This event is truly a first. The Netherlands is leading the way in the deployment of electric trucks,” she says proudly.
The sun starts to shine on the parking lot. Almost symbolic: ultimately, this transition will be successful. The Dutch show event will certainly contribute to that.
