IAA Transportation 2026: environmental issues and hard Asian competition for truck manufacturers

IAA Transportation 2026: September 15–20 in Hanover. The leading commercial vehicle trade fair showcases the future of transport, with the environment as the main theme.

With the cancellation of the Amsterdam BedrijfsautoRAI, the IAA in Hanover is the most important commercial vehicle trade fair in Northwest Europe — and perhaps even in the world. Several thousand exhibitors — including well-known truck manufacturers — showcase their innovations here. The fair is a good indicator of where the future of freight transport is heading. One of the biggest themes: the commercial vehicle industry is committing to a transformation towards environmentally friendly fuels through major investments—but the lack of charging and hydrogen infrastructure remains a bottleneck.

IAA Transportation 2026 will once again present groundbreaking innovations and exciting developments for the transport sector. After years of contraction, the fair now appears to be growing again. More than 70 percent of the exhibitors are international, and 26 percent are new exhibitors. It seems inevitable that a growing number of exhibitors are coming from Asia, which threatens to flood Europe with cheap electric trucks.

Alternative powertrains, connected and autonomous vehicles, software-defined vehicles (SDVs), AI-driven logistics solutions, and the expansion of charging and hydrogen refueling infrastructure emerge as the key transformative themes for the commercial vehicle industry during the Media Summit.

Chairman Hildegard MĂĽller of the VDA (German Automobile Association) reveals the theme of IAA Transportation 2026: “We Deliver.”

Wir liefern.

We deliver.

It reminds us of Angela Merkel’s famous “Wir schaffen das” (We can do it). However, the political framework remains the determining factor in whether innovations actually make it onto the road. “Innovation is too often hampered by excessive regulation and insufficient preconditions. Yet the potential in the heavy transport sector is enormous: nearly 30 percent of COâ‚‚ emissions from road transport in Europe are caused by heavy commercial vehicles. Therefore, a rapid revision of COâ‚‚ regulations for heavy commercial vehicles is necessary. The focus must be on greater flexibility in compliance options and a faster expansion of charging and hydrogen infrastructure. Climate protection, competitiveness, and investment security must go hand in hand. Only then can the transformation succeed,” says MĂĽller.

During various speeches, suppliers such as Daimler Truck, KIA, MAN Truck & Bus, and Schmitz Cargobull emphasize their ambition to actively stimulate the transformation of the transport and logistics sector. Their strategies focus on technology-neutral approaches with battery-electric and hydrogen drives, combined with smart digital solutions. The industrialists also emphasize that a successful zero-emission future requires not only the rapid expansion of charging and hydrogen infrastructure but also better regulation across the entire logistics sector.
